Scott,
Sounds like the work of a borer to me. Is the orange stuff sort of like
wet sawdust? Make a small incision (1/2 - 1") running parallel to the
vine, starting at the hole the borer made. You may need to gently pry
the vine open a little to see the pest. Remember, where there is one,
there are usually several. Check all your vines thoroughly.
