Sounds to me like a borer, was there little shreds of light brown stuff on
the spot? If so, you have to extract it by cutting with the grain of the
vine, and opening it up and getting him out! You will cause minimal damage to
the plant if done withcare .... If you dont get him out.. it is over with
within a week or so..
