Re: off-the-shelf seeds

Randy,
welcome to the world of Giant pumpkin Growing, you'll find that it can
be quite addictive. Anyway Howard grows some stock on his farm in nova
scotia, and i think he "oversees" a certain amount of acerage specifically
set aside to grow ag's in other locations. He probably doesn't supply to
every hardware store himself, i'm sure it comes from other sources. As for
the quality of store bought seeds, who know's you may get lucky. Howard
has good stuff, but it's hard to tell where it actually came from since it
wasn't from howards farm directly. Does it say anything on the package as
to where the seeds came from? I doubt it has the lineage, but maybe it has
the weight of the mother..

good luck
scott

As a first time grower, I was not aware of the AG community out there
and instead of asking for seeds from a true giant, I simply bought some
of Dill's seeds from the hardware store.

Now that I have some fruit set, I'm a little worried about the quality
of these seeds. Will they really produce decent pumpkins? I'm looking
for others who have planted off-the-shelf seeds to share their stories
of success (or failure).

Also, does anyone know the process that Howard Dill (or his company) go
through to select seeds for sale? Does he improve stock from year to
year? Are they seeds from very large pumpkins?

This winter I will be pestering everyone for good seeds!

thanks
