Squash bug life-cycle?

Can anybody explain the squash bug lifecycle
(or provide a web reference)?

What I'm looking for: I've seen squash bugs
in my garden over the years, but my zukes and
zucchini's seemed to produce fine, so I didn't
worry about it. I did notice that pumpkins in
the garden tend to wilt easily if the temp gets
over 80F even though they were well hydrated...
and wondered if it had anything to do with squash
bugs. I assume these are squash bugs I'm seeing.
They are black beetles about 1inch long. I've
always called them stink bugs. I live in the
Portland, Oregon area.

So... how does the squash bug attack the pumpkin
plant? Does the beetle eat the vegetation, or
does it produce some sort of larvae that either
eats or bores into the vine? Should I be looking
for a specific sign of damage (holes in vine,
leaf "chompings", etc?).

Please advise.

Thanks,
David Robinson
