I would also suggest checking very carefully for mites.  They can cause 
damage that sounds like that.  Spraying for them is a major pain, because 
you have to carefully spray the UNDERSIDE of each leaf.  My plants two years 
ago had some kind of mite that you couldn't really see - they just looked 
like a purplish-grayish dust on the underside of the leaves.  But after I 
sprayed all the undersides with a good miticide, the problem disappeared.  
Of course the existing damage didn't go away, but the new leaves that came 
on were okay.
