Re: Yellow Leaf
Dean,
Yellowing in leaves has many possible causes. Some possible explanations are:
nutrient deficiency
nutrient excess causing nutrient deficiency
soil ph way out of range
fungus or bacterial growth.
insect attack.
It is important to note if the leaf in question is new or old. It also
important to note the location of the yellowing on the leaf. Is it only on the
leaf edges, only in-between the leaf stems or evenly over the entire leaf. Some
nutrient deficiencies will force the plant to translocate one or more nutrients
from the older leaves to new growth in an attempt to make up for some
deficiency. This movement of nutrients will cause older, once deep green leaves
to turn yellow.
Keep in mind that some combinations of excessive nutrients will inhibit or stop
the plants ability to take up other nutrients. For instance excessive amount
of potassium could cause a deficiency of calcium, magnesium or iron and maybe
others. This is why we simply cannot pour on huge amounts of everything.
Soil PH can cause nutrient uptake problems if not in an exceptable range. The
generally excepted range for soil PH is between 6.0 and 7.0 with 6.8 considered
optimum. However, soil PH does not change rapidly so it seems unlikely that
this is your problem.
Both fungal and bacterial infestations can cause yellowing of the leaves in one
form or another. Generally they would be expressed as botches or spots on the
leaves and would change rather quickly with each phase of the condition. Fungal
and bacterial conditions cannot be cured. They can only be contained. These
pathogens can over winter in the soil making each successive season more
difficult to manage.
No doubt you have been reading about the many insects that feed on pumpkin
plants and their presence cannot be overlooked. Controlling all insects should
be a major part of your pumpkin patch regime.
Hopefully you can use these guidelines to better diagnose your situation and
find a helpful remedy.
Best wishes for a 1200 pounder.
