Sources for plastic 55 gallon barrels

Josh and friends:

I stumbled upon my plastic barrels from a fellow who was in the pickle
business. Seems his brine and high acid vinegars were delivered in these
barrels. He ran out of storage space just as I met his acquaintance and he
gave me 6 of them.

You don't need to know a pickle man to get barrels; commercial detergents,
bulk cooking oils and lots like that come in these barrels, which actually
vary in size. Some of mine are 45 gal capacity, some are metric volumes. They
are all black, with screw on lids that are in two parts.

Hospitals, large institutions like schools and bulk industrial chemical
suppliers are great sources for these washable, reusable barrels. They are
easily fitted with spigots near the bottom to gravity feed garden plants. We
keep ours at strategic corners of the roof to catch rain water. Barrels are
set up in a series so that we collect all the rain we can.

At the best corner in our backyard for runoff, we have a 300 gallon poly
livestock watering tank covered with tight meshed screen stapled to a wooden
frame. Water pours off the roof into this large container and a hose is
conected to the threaded fill hole near the bottom of the tank. A switch on
the hose's end controls flow. The screen keeps debris out of the tank and so
far, have no problem with mosquito larvae.

I've used my barrels 4 seasons now, no cracks or other signs of wear.
Recommend them highly.
