what am I doing wrong??

Everyone, anyone:

I have a nice huge area for my pumpkins and started 7 plants, however, even 
with all the TLC I have been giving them, one vine split right above soil 
level!! yesterday I noticed another one!!! what am I doing wrong?? Vine 
split so soon???
HELP!
