The lengthway split is probably the result of twisting from wind the last
time you had it. Lengthway splits are not as serious as crossways. Paint the
split with some Captan (fungicide sold at most farm markets) the consistency
of thick paint. Don't cover it with soil until you keep an eye on it for a
few days and paint it again when other wears off or looks as if needs it.
Large pumpkins are grown on split vines. I would anchor the vine with half a
plastic coat hanger but don't move the vine more than an inch or two in the
day so it won't snap. Anchoring will prevent the vine from twisting during
your next wind. You can also cover the vine with soil to anchor it.
