Two Napa growers have 846's that are
flatvining also.............quite a few flat vines
being reported on this seed.
Genetics or weather ??
My guess would be genetics.

Hi List!
My Calai 846 threw out about 2' of flat vine,
then split into 2 vines. One of the two was "oblong",
which I pruned, the other was thick and round, and now
extends 10' out, and is looking good. I noticed
through this list, that Alan R., John Maston, and B.
Sadowski also had this problem this year. Coincidence?
Could all these seeds have come from the same segment?
Could weather be involved?I don't recall hearing about
this seed "flatvining" last year, and thought this
could be an interesting and educational thread.
Good luck to all,
"kilr"
