It sounds to me like you are indeed getting leaf damage and temps in the
90's coupled with bright sunlight can be a bit overwhelming  for the young
AG plants.  What I do (and I am in the NorthEast, in Massachusetts) is to
provide a sun shield during hot periods of the day made out of sail cloth
(Light weight), drive some steaks into the ground, and then take the
sailcloth and apply gromets to all 4 corners, then once the grommets are
applied get some mid-level duty rope and tie them to the stakes, make sure
you tie the shield in such a way as it will not pull itself off the stakes
in the wind.  You can experiment with this technique to your liking.  I have
even used a beach umbrella staked deep into the ground to shield my pumkin
plants in the early season, then later on I use the same shield techniques
to protect the growing pumpkin.
