Re: plants not laying down

Jason,

Yes, I do. When the plants are planted, I place wire hoops over the plants and cover the hoops with a 7'x9' row cover (remay). The keeps the wind, bugs, cold, and small hail off the plants through the first week of June when I remove the row cover. Keeping the wind off the plant really helps. If the vine is still up, I place a little soil under the area where the vine is moving down. This helps keep the vine from making a sudden movement down; thus, snapping the vine. To keep the vine from blowing around, you might want to place a small stake on either side of the vine to keep it from blowing side-to-side. Usually, when I remove the row cover, the vine is already down.

I have had the wind snap a vine when I uncovered the plant before the vine was down. It is not a nice sight to see.

George, do you use anything to keep them from snapping on their own?

Debbie,

The plants grow straight up for several weeks before they start to lay
down. Mine are in that process right now. They are starting to bend over and
vine. Your plants are going through the normal growth pattern. Give them
another week and I bet the main vines start to lay down. Do not try and
force the vines down as the vines could easily snap.

I transplanted my plants about 1.5 weeks ago and they are not laying down.
I have been using bamboo sticks but it is not working. They continue to
stand at attention. Yesterday I added a second set of bamboo sticks closer to the leaves, along with some more soil under the leaves and stem. My hope
is that the leaf nodes will start to root.

Any suggestions?

Debbie
