In my gardening experience, pine needles work quite well for bringing
up the acidity, so you probably would not want to use them. However,
if you're looking to do it on the cheap, fire place ash does a very
good job of raising your ph level and adds lots of micronutrients to
the soil. As a caution, do NOT use barbecue ashes, the drippings,
fats, etc., can cause you problems.
