Dean,
I know of a heavy hitter here in the PNW that laid down a strong, woven, white material under his young fruit. I don't know what it was called. But it was strong enough to aid in dragging the monsters to the tarp the day before weigh-off. It kept the fruit clean and also allowed moisture and air to pass through it. Maybe it keeps the rodents from chewing through too. (Just a guess)
