I am confused about what it means to be a member of the GPC. I thought
the GPC organizes a world wide weighoff each year but is not a "club"
that you join and be a member of. As far as I can tell all pumpkins are
entered free of any fees at their weighoffs. Am I wrong on this?

Zoo,
The GPC does not charge growers an entry fee. I am not sure if any of the
GPC sites might have their own entry fee to generate some local prize money.
The Gpc does charge a 500 dollar site fee with about 90% of that money
returned as GPC prize money. They keep out a small amount for administrative
expenses. I feel the best bet is to let the sites manage their own affairs and
just have some basic rules and compare weights. This year I believe the GPC
will have 23 or 24 sites. When you get that big it is impossible to keep
everyone happy but if you resist meddling too much in the affairs of a local
site, people will be happier. Keep it simple, have some basic rules to follow,
compare weights and share a little prize money..........I think that's enough
for a group to do. Can the GPC do more? Maybe. Do they need to? I'm not so
sure. Hugh Wiberg is the spokesman for the GPC but is not the leader. Every
member of the steering committee has a vote of equal weight when a decision
has to be made.
