Each weigh-off site in the GPC pays a $500 fee to the GPC. This is used to
defray operational expenses and to pay the winners of the overall GPC weigh-
off. I think the GPC was started by the New England Pumpkin Grower's
Association. All of the weigh-off sites participating in the annual weigh-off
are member sites approved and accepted by the GPC.

Marv ,
You have this basically right. The GPC was started by Hugh Wiberg, Tom
Norlin and myself. It wasn't even called the GPC back then. Tom , Hugh and I
had phone conversations and decided it would be neat to have Anamosa, Iowa and
Topsfield compare weights and have a friendly informal competition. We had no
name at the time. I'm not sure if it was Hugh or Tom that had contact with
Nutree and they became interested. When Nutree decided to join, it was the
people at Nutree who came up with the name Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. Howard
Dill and the Windsor site was the next group to join. That is basically how it
started to the best of my recollection.
