Re: fertilizer

Doug,
The whole idea at this stage of plant growth is not to burn it with
fertilizer but to encourage the root growth. Once they get to the 3 leaf
stage I usually use 10-52-10 water soluble mixed at the recommendation on
the box and watered in at the plant base. This will promote root growth
as well as green up your plant but isn't too heavy on the nitrogen. I use
this until the plant vine gets to about the one foot stage. After that
the plant has a very strong root system and should sustain the vine until
you can bury the main vine to get more rooting. Keep an eye on your
plant. It should be green but not too green. If the plant needs more
fertilizer after it starts to vine you might spread some all purpose
granular fertilizer with a hand spreader under the leafs being sure to
rinse any material from the leafs and vines. If possible you might take a
soil sample and send it off to see if you really need the fertilizer.
Last year I had good success without using a lot of fertilizer. I used a
total of 20 lbs. of all purpose granular on three plants that were each
in a 40 x 40 patch.
