627.5 Hester - I AM DEAD

Well, my prized 627.5 Hester 95 seed that I planted in a special hill all by
itself, that I spent a whole day preparing the hill for, that was my only hope
of getting a record pumpkin when starting this late, finally came up. It had
beautiful thick stalk coming up out of the ground, with no seed leaves. A
STUPID GOPHER decided that he would eat the seed leaves right off leaving just
a stick. It was ever covered with floating row cover with the edges buried,
and he ripped that off! And here is the sick thing....he didn't TOUCH anything
else!!!! We asked the guy who owns the land why the gophers don't attack HIS
stuff, and he just said "Because they know better.".
Well that's just nice. He does pick them off with a shotgun (and brags about
it. Last year he even took a dead one and strung him up on a post as an
"example" to the other gophers, and let the birds finish him off. Trust me I
am not making this up)! It didn't touch my Burpee Prizewinner plant (of
course), or my melons or anything else. NO, he had to pick the HESTER, and
ONLY the Hester! We are going to make cages from wire mesh to out over the
other ones, but still the Hester was my only real hope, so I don't know what
to do now. If I can't find any other seeds, I guess I am majorly screwed. If
anyone by any chance has any extra, PLEASE let me know, I will do anything for
them. I have one more question that I seriously dount is true, but this other
guy who grows pumpkins (not prize winning ones, just regular Jack-O-Lantern
type ones), said that sometimes even if the seed leaves are chewed off, it
still might survive (?). I want to beleive him, but I also don't want to get
my hopes up if it's not true. Does anyone think ther eis any chance of this?
