Oregon Update

Greetings all,
The rain is back in Oregon for the next couple days, but its okay. It only
got up to 68 degrees in the patch yesterday, but its also okay. The plants
are doing well, the soil is fluffy and weedless, and its crawdading season.
Crawfish have little to do with pumpkin growing, unless your hungry. It had
been a while since the last OU, so I guess its time then........
Site #1 The #875 Lloyd stands alone again. It took off so to speak and its
lookin good. It is putting out males and the females will be ready in 10 days
or so. The females are looking quite green, so I may get squash or some white
pumpkins from it, both of which are always cool unless one goes over 1000
pounds. The plant is now 10 x 14 feet.
Site #2 The #697 Ciliberto is the beef in the patch in terms of stalk
thickness. Gotta love the near 30" leaves. The plant is now 10 x 12 feet.
The #615 Wilson is 2 weeks behind, but its main runner is but 2 feet shorter
at 8 x 10 feet. It too looks quite heafty.
Site #3 The #825 Shymanski is quite the plant. Nice big leaves in the 26"
range and vigorous, nearly as much as the #469 or #627.5. The plant is 14 x
23 feet now and will set its first baby tomorrow.
Site #4 The #827 Holland is better than last years 827, but still the
lightweight in the patch vegetatively. Smaller leaves and vine diameters, but
it is 13 x 18 feet and will set #1 tomorrow.
Site #5 The #567.5 Mombert is dark green and growing well for a #567.5. It
is 10 x 14 feet and looking to set a fruit in about 5 days.
Site #6 The #469 Hester is the second biggest in the patch with the thickest
vines. It has a 16' main runner with its first secondaries stretching over 16
feet wide. It also has a double vine secondary 8 feet out that is really
thick. I was scared it was going to flat vine on me, but it is now 5 feet out
with no flat vine characteristics. I have been plucking females, but now will
set one in about 6 days some 14 feet out. The #627.5 Hester running the other
way is 18 feet in main runner and 20 feet wide and is the top plant in the
patch. Over 2 foot leaves, thick vines and vigorous growth and to top it all
off I pollinated a beautiful 5 lobe female this morning with lobes 1-3 getting
825 Shymanski pollen, lobe 4 getting #469 Hester, and lobe 5 getting the
#567.5 Mombert pollen. It was a little early in the morning, but the female
accepted well and was covered.
Take Care all, for it has begun. If I can average 11 pounds of growth per day
until the weigh off, the first 1100 pound pumpkin will be weighed in.
Brett The Pumpkinguru Hester
