I very much agree. We also have aol, and it's very handy. My daughters are
all quite restricted in what we allow them to access, and all research must be
done on my or my husbands screen name, since their's won't allow them open web
access. Nasty Mommy, that's me! I have found that they tend to use it in
cycles. Sometimes for weeks on end, they will check their e-mail daily, and
then it wears off, and they don't check it for a month or so. The only thing
they really spend time checking out is research for a school project, and that
has to be done on OUR names, to which WE must sign on for them, and we hang
around, snooping. Also, they aren't too good at finding stuff on the net, so
we end up doing much of the actual searching, which means we know exactly what
they're looking at.
I also understand that families have their own rules that they are comfortable
with, and activities that they prefer to engage in with their children. I
don't mean any of my first paragraph as a slam against families who don't
allow their children to do this at home. I just know that control is possible,
you just have to know how to do it.
