Pete, Jake, and others -
Glad to hear the 935 survived its 100 mile journey northward
and is surviving!
Here in Ladysmith my only plant, a MacDonald 719, is doing
well with a modest 8 ft main vine, but no blossoms yet.
Maybe next week?
A couple of other growers 5 miles south of me are coming
along well. Don Hilton has a couple of 815's growing and at
last report was organizing a big weighoff party at his
beach-front property on Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. The
brochures are already printed! I can't miss that! Don's not
on the pumpkin list yet but I just e-mailed him instructions
on how to join.
About a mile away from Don, Craig Sandvik has an 815 which
is twice the size of my plant. I just got back from a nice
visit with him. Craig is on Duncan's 'Top 1000' list with
several 500 pounders in the past few years. He's also
organizing a contest amongst 20 or so of his fellow pulp
mill workers.
And a short ferry ride away over on Saltspring Island,
Denise Beck is, I believe, organizing a contest in
conjunction with the Saltspring Island Fall Fair. Its in mid
September, - a bit early, but I may give it a whirl.
Finally in Nanaimo, 15 miles to the north of here, there's
the big annual Buckerfields weigh-off in October. The
perennial champion is 84 year old Sam Elmhurst whose best
last year was 397, followed by Rick Careless with 380. I'm
expecting 500lbs this year, and should be a cinch to win
that one.
So there's lots happening on Vancouver Island, and lots of
opportunity to trade virile male blossoms during the next
few weeks.
Bill
