re: roots

Question: My plants have been in the ground 5 days. Planted on 1 foot
mounds, on top of holes 3’ x 3’ and 3’ deep. Attached Gal. water bottles (3
ea) with 1/4" drip tubes going to the bottom of the hole. Filled holes
with mushroom compost, steer manure, potting soil, organic compost and
regular dirt. I’ve been giving them each between 4 to 6 gallons of water a
day through the jugs, trying to get the roots to grow down. Once they start
vining, I’ll put the soaker hose on top. But for now, I can't tell how much
water they're getting, the ground on top is always dry. I can take the pick
and shovel, but the stress of guessing how much water – NOT. Can anyone
tell me how many gallons a day they need.
Or maybe the question should be: will this even work.
My yard and my neighbors yard look like a little MASH unit, with the
windbreaks around each pumpkin, their little tents for night, and 3 IV’s
hanging over each one.
Have I lost it?
No, I just let it go.

Connie
