Re: Beginners Questions

Steve,
Try prizewinner variety for the 100 pound range. They have pretty good
shapes and great color. Howden is probably still the most popular variety
grown by commercial growers. I have met John Howden from Massachusetts a few
years back. There are two types of Howden...regular and Howden Biggie that
comes in about 35 pounds. The problem, in my opinion, with Howden Biggie is
that the stem is much too small for the size of the pumpkin. My favorites are
Gold Standard and Gold Rush from Rupp seeds in wauseon , Ohio. Gold Rush
averages 35 pounds and has a stem as big as your forearm....people love them.
Some farmers won't plant them because thet run about 60 bucks a
pound...they're worth it.Gold Standard is smaller than Howden but is a
beautiful mid sized hybrid about 15 to 18 pounds. Tom Fox is a nice pumpkin
from Johnny's seeds in Albion, Maine...a little smaller than a howden but it
has a good size stem for its size.
Growers bury vines to incourage tap rooting off the bottom of the vine. If
you cover the top of the vine where the leaves connect to it, you will get a
second set of tap roots sprouting off the top of the vine.
