If you go to the Ottawa St. Lawrence Growers Association home page, select
the link "Why Bury the vines".  There is a picture that demonstrates why.
Why bury vines? Because each leave node on the vine will put out roots. The
picture shows a vine that grew into a barrel of water and put out this mass
of roots. Burying the vine promotes the root growth.   Hope this clarifies
everything.

PS:
For all of those out there who might think it is a good idea to grow a vine
into a barrel of water and then mix fertilizer into the water, it has been
tried and the vine will rot (turn to mush) after a couple of weeks.
