Re: 1262 Emmons x 1260 Weir

Recently have been working with some growers that are stuck in the mind set
that all they need is better genetics. They grow 150-200lbs year after
year. I told them if you only change the seed not much is going to change
if you do nothing else.

Seems at different levels we all are looking for the magic seed. The hot
genetics. Sure some seeds in a batch have more vigor. But in reality its
the grower that makes the genetics get hot. The more a seed is played out
with top growers the hotter it looks. I keep finding these nagging hints
that a seed is only as good as its environment. The better we as growers
improve our skills and environment above ground and below ground the better
our genetics work. Climate plays a huge role.

If we look at our hottest genetics in the past there seems to be 10-15% of
of a given seed batch that is dynamo. And generally it is dynamo because
the core group of great growers took the time to plant it. As time goes on
and the more good growers join the HH core group the better the genetics
of a given seed will look if they all plant it. It probably will appear
more consistent reliable . So have the seeds gotten better?? I would bet if
you took the top 30 growers and did their 5 year average.........then gave
them all the same seed to plant... that the progeny would parallel their
average.

For years have been chasing some of the top genetics in the world and
planted them 935,946,1006, on and on and they all end up in the 650 range.
In a given season. As my soil gets better so have the weights...or the
genetics?? Take what we saw this year Geneva got lucky and lined up the
silver bullets? Ever notice that lately most the HH have a knack at finding
silver bullets.

If the fruit is a phenotype product of its environment includes grower) then
what weight do we put on genetics and weight??

Just some nagging thoughts......MB
