Vickie:
I may try mulch on my patch too. I live in FL and while our weather is hot, we
are not dry....was concerned that the mulch might keep the area too moist, and
invite fungus. (Can't have a fungus amongus!)
We have fantastic compost available to us free from the Orange County
recycling center. We also have mulch available from Seminole County.
Interesting that one county has only compost and the other only mulch.
Speaking of compost, Monday is our compost hauling day.
One nice advantage to FL is the afternoon rains that hit about 3PM for 30
mins. Just in time to dry off the leaves before dark at 9PM. My water
situation is good, but the daily rains will wreak havoc on my spray program.
May just have to get my backyard fogger fixed and use it to fog the field
twice a week. An ounce of prevention....
My field is surrounded by water, and we have some lovely white egrets taking
up residence in the reeds. I hope I don't have to worry about critters, there
was no evidence of mole trails before we turned the soil. We did, however,
unearth a concrete slab and about a hundred red bricks from a building that
used to be there 100 years ago. One of these quiet days I will go to city hall
or the newspaper archives and find out what was there.
