Lee;
It would be advisable to plant in the North of your square and train your
main vine to grow south to south west. Many growers have no vines growing
North. This will help you achieve the length you want in your main vine. The
best way I know to train your vine to head South to South West is with plastic
coat hangers. When the vine is in the air, before it grows long enough to fall
to the earth on its own, stick one end of a broken coat hanger in the ground
and put slight pressure on the vine to head it in the direction you want it to
go. Plastic coat hangers are thick enough not to cause harm to the tender
vine. The vine can and will grow fast enough to cause the coat hanger to be
moved several times a day. When the vine falls over and touches the ground
always keep it pegged to the ground or the wind will get it and snap it!
