All joking aside, you need to take a soil sample to your ag extension
office and get their recommendation.  Adding sand could help loosen it up
or it could turn it into a nasty, hard, conglomerate.   We pay them the
big bucks to know the difference.  When I added 3 inches of manure to my
clay, it drained just fine.
