 These are my questions:
 1. Is it possible given my size limitation?
 2. Will the vines overrun the rest of my vegetable garden? (and
 backyard?)
 3. Is it better to have a square or a rectangular area?

Rick,
You can do it. 500 square feet is enough, all though I would prefer a
little more. I would choose a rectangular shape and start the plant near one
end of the rectangle to let the main vine crawl the other way. You might
choose 3 plants at 800 square feet...depending on the way the plots woud lay
out. You will have to prune the plants once you have a pumpkin.
