Re: Split main vine

Bernell....it sounds like you have what is known as a FLAT VINE. Search the
archives for info on flat vines, multiple vines or MEDUSA and you will see
ongoing debates on potential causes and "solutions".Generally speaking,no
major sized pumpkins come of these type vines and given the choice, most
growers would be likely to go with the backup plant. However, there has been
limited success with cutting one of the two split vines and going with the
remaining vine as a main vine. There has been limited success, even big ones,
from cutting both split vines and training a side vine to become the new
main. This is done by gradually positioning the side vine nearest the stump in
the direction you want to go.....it will naturally become a main vine on its
own if treated like a main vine(given the roam of the patch,so to speak).
Whatever the cause....some say genetics, some say heat, some say
inbreeding, some say its as a result of damage to the plant/seed.....most
would give up on the plant and go with another in the patch.Chances are it
won't produce a biggie if that is what your after.....good luck..Glenn A.
( I had the same thing on my 1092Burke last year)
