Kim...chances are it was emerging out of the soil. They LOOK like they're
diving back into the soil but thats the "windup before the pitch"...the pitch
is when the seedling pulls up,sheds the seed casing and opens up the seed
(cotyledon) leaves to the light. These cotyledon leaves have all the early
energy stored in them for the young seedlings to root and grow...without the
seed leaves you will,at BEST, severely hamper the early and competitive life
of the seedling. I would recommend going with a backup plant or starting a
new one ASAP.....you should always have backups ...I start a set of backups
every 7 days "just in case".....this way I'm prepared anytime up to June for
that "errant frisbee", misplaced soccer shot ,fat footed grower, or
unexpected supersonic wind gust.
Its a tough start without cotyledons................good luck....Glenn A.
