cow manure

Is there any way I can add manure to the patch at this time of the growing season? Plants are in protective closures and I'm thinking of adding the manure to a gravely soil just to help the texture.  If I add it 15 to 20 feet from the plants will it be too strong once the plants reach it?  This is relatively fresh cow manure.
