Matt,
I believe the low quantity of high weight pumpkins resulting from
self-pollination correlates directly to the low quantity of such seeds
grown. I did a lot of research before writing the 'AG Genetics Primer' you
see on the AGGC site two years ago and stand behind it's contents 100%
today. I believe cross-pollination is very useful in passing along favorable
visual characteristics but don't see such crosses aiding in appreciable
weight gains. I would go so far as to say that random crosses do more harm
than good as they further complicate the gene pool and subsequently make the
predictability of progeny impossible. Just my opinion though.
I made a post a couple weeks back asking for established pumpkin
organizations to help support the AGGC site. I see many conversation threads
here filled with data that could come only from the AGGC site. Please help
insure the availability of this invaluable resource while it still exists.
Thanks,
Mike Nepereny
