RE: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #

We are a Cub Scout Pack planting a Pumpkin patch as a Fall fundraiser. Last year we had a problem with polination, with the scale of the patch ( > 200 plants) I do not want to polinate by hand.

What is the best flowers to attract the correct type of Bees to polinate pumpkin plants.
My neighbor is a Bee Keeper, but all he knows are the hunny bees. He did tell me that the Pumpkin flowers do not produce nector, so the hunny bees are not the best.

Can anyone shed some light on this.

As for the Sunflowers, we did not have bird problems, but Ants.

Thanks
tad

Vince,
you could put out some bird food... then maybe they'd
eat that instead of your sunflowers. then again maybe
just eat both the seed and your sunflowers- and that
would attrack more birds ???
I have heard that chili powder, pepper, hot peppers,
etc... (ie something spicy hot) in a powder or spray
will keep away a varity of animals... it might work
for you.

Okra? Lima beans? Cactus leaves? Mustard greens? Urchin roe? Trigger fish? David forbade me to plant sunflowers anywhere near the patch this year for that very reason. So the sunflower is out in the front yard (of four seeds planted, two came up - and the cats got one). Now the birds are gathering here, eating Meow Mix. Next year

hi vince and kathie,
we haven't had a problem with birds eating the plant itself but have had birds pick the emerging seed from the ground and have found taking chicken wire and folding it so it makes an upsidedown "v" has kept the birds from picking at young seedlings and have covered the heads with cheesecloth to the birds out hope that helps

Ok - I have a problem that maybe someone here can help me with. A bunch of tiny little songbirds have developed a taste for the sunflowers I planted near my patch. They land on the leaves and tear them to shreds.

What's the best thing I can spray on the sunflowers to make them a little less tasty??

Thanks,

vince

I believe they may be referring to foods for human consumption?

I bought sulfur fungicide yesterday. I sprinkled it on my pumpkin
plant then thought I'd read the precautions list... It states not to
use in on cumcumbers, watermelons and squash. I then proceded to rince
it off. As anyone used it on pumpkins?

Thanks

Vince
Hot pepper spray or steamers they use in grape vineyards. Great spring and
very early summer leaves for many pets of all sizes. Hope this gives you some
help.
