Steve:
I pretty new at the kohlrabi business. All I can say is that I had a
whopping fun time last year growing them. It was my first year with the
giants. I have grown kohlrabi commercially here in Wisconsin for many
years, so I guess I used some of those techniques. I started with Ray's
monster kohlrabi seed-that was and still is the only source I have. I
germinated in 288 round cells in a germ chamber, then transplanted to 72's,
and then to four inch pots. (This all goes on in the greenhouse) I think
I started them around March 10th. In the field I don't do anything real
special. They got an incorporated dose of balanced 19-19-19, and then
several liquid injections through the irrigation system. Although not
quite as fun as the giant pumpkins, it was a really good time watching them
grow.
I also had to drench them frequently for root rot and onion maggots.
I'd like to hear what you are doing, It sounds like you've taken a few
strides beyond me. My best last year(my first year) was 32 pounds, I was
pretty happy with that.
I would also be interested in some seed from your "secret" hybrid"
Here I thought no one was growing the giant sputniks.
