Seed coats

The discussion on whether and when to remove the seed coat is interesting. It seems to me that giant pumpkins really do have amongst the most difficult of seeds to get to emerge and develop properly, and that a Caeserian now and again can indeed be helpful. However, if it's done too soon, the moisture loss from the cotyledons can lead to their shrivelling and dying before they can green-up. I doubt whether anything is helped by the cotyledons getting broken - they are, after all, basically a food reserve for the germinating seed.
