Lisa: i'll buy that vine borer theory, what part of the country are you in??
it's still too early for borers in the N.E. but maybe where you are they're
out??!!
look for a hole in your vine, where you see all the damage , look for a large
white
caterpiller/grub in the hole!! i have sucessfully removed them buy using a
small -
pointed stick!! if you can't find it you can inject nematodes into the vine
to kill it!!
they are available through GARDENS ALIVE i'll get the number 4 you if you're
interested?!! pesticides will do little to kill it once it's in the vine!!
but you should be
spraying your vines SEVIN or METHLYOXOCLOR this will help control them!!
where there's one there's bound to be more!!!!!!!!!
some people will slit the vine lenthwise and remove the borer that way then
twist tie
the vine back together!
you should also put a funjicide on the affected area such as CAPTAN or SULFUR
i'd use sulfur though it safer than captan!!
burying the vine may also help it heal! i'd let the wound dry first before
burying it!!
good luck!!!!!!!
