I would guess you had intended to cut out the weaker of the two plants at
some stage.
While cutting out one causes no stress on the remaining plant, given your
situation, I would go for the transplant immediately as the sooner the
better for both plants. I would further suggest you do the work by hand to
minimize the damage. This early in the season, and based on the size of the
plants, I think you are gaining more by having two plants that can grow to
maturity rather than focusing on the stress each plant will have to endure
when you transplant one. IMHO, go the transplant route.
