I guess I was not clear in my temperature question. The "dif" I referred
to only has to do with the difference between day and night AIR
temperature.
To briefly describe "dif"... The greater the difference between high day
temp and cool night temp is a positive "dif" and this will promote stem
elongation. Cool day and warmer night is a negative "dif" and will act
as a growth regulator and cause stems to not elongate. All of this
interacts with average temperature which hastens or retards maturity.
How you manipulate temperature difference between night and day as well
as the average temperature between night and day can have a tremendous
impact on the growth of some plants I have worked with as well as with
the flower size.
I do not know how all this would impact fruit size such as a pumpkin.
Hopefully some of the specialists who frequent this list might have some
comments or suggestions from their experience.
All said and done, none of this may be practical outside of a greenhouse
environment.
I assume soil temp is also very important, that is why I was wondering
if there was an optimum soil temp; however I doubt if major shifts in
soil temp would be beneficial. I have only seen recirculating hot or
cold water in underground pipe or tubing used as a way to manipulate soil
temps. Comercially, some growers cool or heat their soil to produce
amaryllis blooms out of season.
Thanks for any help.
Allen
