Growers,
To everyone who has requested seeds, they are on the way, yes even yours
Johan, although it may take a few days to reach South Africa. The #598 seeds
are still drying, and if there are more than 20 good seeds I will send the
extra ones out later. It doesn't look promising so far however.
I thought I would get in on this square footage debate too, after all I am
the self proclaimed pumpkinguru whose word is of course all knowing in my own
mind. I get asked by new growers "How much room do I need?" I whip out my
picture of the #910 Nelson 94 Plant I grew in 1995 which produced over 2500
pounds worth of official pumpkin and I say this much. It was 122 x 110 Feet.
Am I exagerating? Nope. I did not prune a bit and it showed just why it is
called an atlantic giant. That is 13,420 square feet. Since then I have
learned to prune a bit, but I am one for the big plant big pumpkin theory,
and allow 40 x 50 where I can, no less than 30 x 40. Keep in mind the 1061
was set 25 feet out on the main vine if memory serves me right. that makes
at least 25 feet in one direction alone. My only question to the Zehrs would
be when did they start that plant to get a 25 foot runner by the July 3rd
pollinization date of the 1061? I start early, but wow.
Take Care,,
Brett The Pumpkinguru
