Over the past several weeks, I have seen a few posts on how much space is
needed to grow a Atlantic Giant. I for one am a firm believer in a big plant.
My patch is 12,000 sq ft. I planted 4-plants last year. This year I will plant
3. ( due to increased work load) I however have seen some very interesting
things this past season. There is a ''core'' group of growers here in RI and
Mass who travel patch to patch over the season. This past year I have seen
3-pumpkins over 650 lbs grown in small back yard gardens. One grower here in RI
using my seed from last years 567.4 grew a 686 lb AG ( this pumpkin won
prettiest at Toppsfield) This pumpkin plant had only a few hundred
leaves!!!!!! I have never seen a AG that big on such a tiny plant! You could
tuch the pumpkin and reach out and tuch the base of the plant! A couple other
pumpkins in Mass were over 650lbs grown on slightly larger plants. Two of
these three pumpkins were grown by second year growers. So how much space is
really needed? I don't know, but I can tell you if you are sitting there with
a small patch it can be done I've seen it!!!!!!!!!!!
