Rick, Along these lines I concur with your effort. My approach to the
next big wt. gain has been to try and double the chromosome number that we
work with. When I got my first and only commercial seed the records were
in the 400's, 50% of the seed I got grew squash. Each year I selected out
the ones that produced pumpkins only, for my seed source. After 3yrs I've
not had anymore Squash. Several years out of the last 15 I did not grow
because of time limits. Until this year I didn't shade but did bury roots
. I don't work the ground ahead because we have wind blown deposits and
when they are loose and uncovered they want to move with the wind. Each
year I try to take the largest seeds from the largest pumpkin that survives
my practices. So far this has resulted in a plant that will grow under
adverse conditions,is not affected by heat, except for the length of
pumpkin development time and aborts if not covered. I've never had any
splits or rot, this may be from climate. For years I've had medium size
tan seeds. This year, my 5th with cholchicine, my cared for plant gave me
tan seeds double the parents size. My watered by drip and nothing else
gave all white seeds and a 50lb pumpkin. My watered every time the
windbreak water ran gave me a 7lb with 200 tan seeds with white on the
edge. Grasshopper swarms are the only time I control insects. Roger
