RE: Green mottle Bad ?
If we want to call it a pumpkin we should probably make sure it's orange or
something close to it anyway. I took one to a weighoff last year that was
rules a squash. It was a little disappointing but it wasn't really a
competative fruit. It was pale orange with heavy catalouping and the
cantalouping hid much of the green at the stem and blossom ends, (at least
to my eyes as I always considered it to be a pumpkin.) Most sites rule that
it must be 75% cream yellow to orange. This is somewhat subjective and as
you stated the grids help. Should there be a bias? Well, personally I
prefer orange, but if the put a blue gray monster on the scales and it
weighed more than the pumpkins, then perhaps the prize should go to the
heaviest. I don't see equal pay for squash because I doubt the sponsors
will want to cough up the extra cash. But should the weighoff be
segregated? Probably not. I doubt that there will be a huge increase in
people growing squash instead of pumpkins, most of us are biased toward the
orange orbs. Some will switch trying to get to heavier weights, but you
never know when you plant that seed that it won't grow a nice orange pumpkin
for you. At any rate they'll still be called giant pumpkin weighoffs no
matter what color fruit we haul to the scales. So far the heaviest
"pumpkins" are still heavier than the heaviest "squash". Will that change
if there is equal competition and heaviest "fruit" wins? Maybe.........let
the competition begin.
