AG pumpkins

I have got a question, does any body know how long a pumpkin can live on the vine?  I live in the desert so frost and cold nights are out of the picture by mid Feb.  Should I plant then or wait until april?  Another problem is the heat,  half of the summer has tempatures over 100F.  It is also very dry here.
