Re: Insecticide Granules

Stephen,

I'm a little confused. The active ingredient to the Triazicide Granule ("Once and Done Insect Killer") that I was referring to is Lambda-Cyhalothrin. Are you suggesting the ingredient works well on SVB, but just should not be used in a granular form that is added to the soil?

Thanks,
Dave

Triazicide is a synthetic pyrethyroid contact insecticide. It has no
systemic properties so there is no reason to incorporate this material into
the soil. Never - ever.

Imidacloprid (aka Merit, etc) is a systemic. While Merit is not labeled for
use on pumpkins or other edible food crops, Provado & Admire are used on
food crops. There would be no advantage to using imidacloprid in te fall.
The effective residual (in a vine) is probably no more than 60 days so it
should only be applied just prior to the targeted pest's emergence.

None of these granules are effective against Squash Vine Borers.
Imidacloprid is great on cucumber beetles. However SVB require the use of a
residual contact insecticide like Bifenthrin 0r Lambda-cyhalothrin.

Does anyone add any type of granules to their soil as a preventive measure
against SVB and other insects? If so, what would you recommend and when do
you add it (fall or spring)? I was considering using Triazicide, but the
label just mentions lawn use, not gardens. I was also wondering what it
would
do to the earthworms?

Thanks,
Dave
