Trellising?

I've grown giant pumpkins for the last couple of years. While I wouldn't
mind winning a blue ribbon at the county fair (this year, my 145 pound
entry impressed the neighbors but was only the sixth biggest in the
county), I mostly grow pumpkins to have great jack o' lanterns come
Halloween. That is, while we all get a kick out of seeing the pumpkins
get huge, I'm not willing to let my pumpkins take over my garden or my
yard.

Last year, they pulled down my corn plants. This year, they blocked off
half of the kid's trampoline. (Miraculously, the 145 pounder grew under
the trampoline, but didn't get smashed.)

Can I train the leaves onto a trellis next year?

It seems obvious that trimming the vines so they don't take over the
yard will severely limit the pumpkin - is this so, or can I get away
with trimming?
