flat pumpkins

hi to all
I was wondering what opinion everyone has on what ultimately effects
the shape of a giant pumpkin. Is it totally genetic, or do
environmental as well as nutritional factors all effect it to some
degree?. The seeds I used two years ago were of the Dill variety and my
pumpkins all had a flatter squashed look to them. This year I was
fortunate to have several of Chris Anderson's 977 as well as 815's and
the pumpkins I grew again had more of the flatter appearance to them.
Just was wondering what, if anything I need to correct. . Is it the
seeds or other factors? Looking at the pictures posted, I know that they
can actually be somewhat round! Sure would be nice to grow something
that water ran off of not sat on top of !!
Thanks for the time!
Gaylen
