Thanks for the info...I didn't know it was such a high ph....I'll keep
looking for a cucumber beetle deterrent.

I have no personal experience in using lye.  However, it is a very basic
substance, meaning that the pH is very high.  It "burns" because of this
high pH.  Traces of the chemical itself may leach out by spring, but I
wonder if it would alter the pH of the soil unfavorably.  I'd be cautious
unless your patch is too acidic, or unless you have a bunch of pine needles
or something else acidic you could add to your patch in spring if the soil
test then registers a high pH.

Just my own thoughts, don't take this as gospel,
