RE: Cucumber Beetle Eggs
I can't reply with an answer about lye. I would be afraid that it might
change my soil ph. making it more alkaline. Just by tilling your garden in
the fall and again in early spring would kill off the majority of them, by
buring them deep in the soil or bringing them up to the surface to freeze
or be eaten by birds. A spray program of liquid-seven kills them nicely.
Radishes, marigold, catnip, and nasturtium will repel them from your
garden. I would be worried about the adults too, they overwinter in weeds
and under logs etc. Waiting and ready to take a munch of your newly
emerged seedling next spring. Cover your seedling next year as long as
possible. A cucumber beetle can defoliate it in just a couple of days!

I was told I could put LYE on my patch this fall to kill off the
cucumber beetles eggs the lye would burn them......and traces of the lye
would be gone by spring....and so should the eggs for 2000. Any -one
know any-thing about this....I know my grandmother used it
outdoors...for their outhouses...never seemed to bother the grass. I
had a major infestation this year and was diligent on my
spraying...nothing worked...has any-one a well guarded secret they would
like to share...on these pests. Deborah ...
