greenhouses

Yo Brian,
I've grown pumpkins in greenhouses before. Most of the big pumpkins
grown in the UK are grown in greenhouses.I've had biggies indoor and out.On
the downside is you need a huge greenhouse to grow it in.Where I grow my
pumpkins the regulations will not allow a greenhouse larger than 20'x10' so
I have to compromise.I grow the vine in the greenhose and let it grow
through a hole at one end into the patch. This means I have the main root
system inside where I can control the watering and feeding and the
temperature. The rest of the root system from the vine and side vines is
outside and is subject to the usual weather. The roots inside fill the
greenhouse as do the leaves and vine.I have opening windows around the whole
of the greenhouse to keep the temp down on hot days and allow air
circulation. The fruit however is always pollinaed outside as it will not
grow in the hot greenhouse, they always tend to rot. Some UK growers use
greenhouses but they are very large, sometimes 150'x100', with fans to keep
the temp down on the fruit, something I cannot compete with. But I did grow a
743lb pumpkin this way in 1997.If yo want any more info,e-mail me.
